Training Aids from Clinicians

John on Molly - first ride

The horse industry has had an avalanche of novice riders that have found a gold mine in training information. Trainers have started showing clinics and the result is that there have been some wonderful advances in horse training techniques over the last couple decades. You can see many free on their shows aired on RFD TV.

You can learn things in bite-size peaces that can be applied on your own horse. It's a huge benefit. One down side is that there is a sea of information and it can be overwhelming. The impression many of these trainers give is that it takes dozens of their videos and many months to break a colt starting with many more months of ground work before you get on. The truth is you can start a colt that's never been touched in less than a month and have them gentle enough go anywhere without fear of getting bucked off in 5-10 rides of 1-2 hours each. Its not hard to break a horse.

Here’s a list of sites where clinicians are offering training videos books etc. Many air ½ hour videos on RFD TV.

http://www.downunderhorsemanship.com/ Clinton Anderson probably has the most useful stuff for intermediate riders. You do get the impression that it takes 100 DVD’s and years to train your horse though.

http://www.chris-cox.com  Very practical

http://horsetrainingvideos.com/index.htm Larry Trocha trains cutting horses. His videos are good but target an advanced audience. Get the free email newsletter.

www.horseteacher.com Steve Rother is another Clinician that is very similar to Clinton Anderson.  Steve does a clinic here in the Tri-Cities area a couple times a year.

http://www.parelli.com/home.html Pat Parelli takes the cake for “marketing” They have tons of DVD’s and the target novice riders. Their focus is on graduating them to the next level of proficiency. It’s a whole program with no end to what you could spend.

http://www.craigcameron.com/ Craig Camerion is pretty new to RFD TV be he has a ton of stuff on his web site.

http://www.wintersranch.com/ modest web site

http://www.johnlyons.com/ John Lyons is a Christian that’s been around a long time

http://www.richardshrake.com/ Richard Shrake is one of the original trainers and has been around for decades.

http://www.curtpate.com/ Curt is from Montana. I know him a little bit. He’s not on RFD TV. He does clinics and has some material. He focuses on training ranch horses as opposed to arena event horses.

Bits and Spurs

Whenever I get a chance I like to help young riders learn to get the right equipment so they can continue to "train" their horse. Spurs are always my first suggestion and this is the style I like best

On a finished horse or even a mature 3 yr old this style of snaffle with a shank works well (Tom Thumb). I use chain chin straps and make sure they contact the chin when the reigns are pulled back.

Horse Packing

Several times a summer I like to takes horses on the Pacific Crest Trail in Washington - It's beautiful. My dad taught me how to tie a diamond hitch on a sawbuck pack saddle when I was 16. Now I have all the stuff for one pack horse. This is a great link regarding the practical aspects of horse packing.

These guys have great stuff. I bought my pack saddle before I found them... to a get an adjustable tree. I use Studly to pack part of the time and I wanted to make sure I didn't put a saddle sore on him.  See item 2 at:

Saddles

Sue and I went to Pendleton to look at saddles and I got bit my an impulse item... a Hamley Wade. It's almost to nice to ride, but I'll have it all scuffed this fall.
